I could save the government $6 billion dollars that could be immediately put into the health budget to relieve the strain. Cut the $4.5 billion in mining company subsidies this year and get rid of the private health insurance rebate. I could also save the public hospitals a lot of time and money by allowing them one ambulance at all times to transfer private health insurance patients to private hospitals. It’s got nothing to do with personal responsibility. Your argument would say that someone riding their bike legally on the side of the road that gets hit by a car has no right to public health care even if the driver of the car was found to have been in the wrong. This is just another Medicare bash article. There’s not even any mention of the aging population and how those life saving old age medications aren’t being swapped for generics to save money on the PBS. Medicare is universal health care. Once you start putting restrictions on it then it becomes a different monster indeed.

Sure, I’m a smoker I have tried to quit a few times, and I know the risks of disease and sure, I’d pay for my own treatment. In fact, I already do. Tax, baby, tax. Yup I am already investing in my own health care. So if I am expected to pay for my own health care from being a smoker and taking an avoidable risk, then drop the tax I am paying for Medicare and the levy. I would put this money in to a savings account to treat my own ailments. Can’t see that happening though, can you?
